Re: Innovator-C edition download links broken
Posted in 2012
Users reported that the download links for the free Informix Innovator-C edition (11.70UC5IE) on IBM's site were dead for weeks. Art Kagel and Fernando Nunes confirmed IBM/IIUG were aware, said it was not merely a broken link but a product issue, and pointed people to an IBM contact (Anita McKeithen); the Developer Edition was suggested as an interim option. Marcus Haarmann later relayed via his distributor that IBM was building a component to enforce the edition's resource restrictions, with an estimated two-week fix. No confirmation of the links actually being restored appears in the thread, which drifts into debate over free databases and the history of project Arrowhead.

There is currently an issue with this. At this moment I cannot give you an ETA for the resolution of this situation, but I can direct you to Anita McKeithen (mckeithe at us.ibm.com) who can eventually provide further help. Regards. Hi The problem is still there, anyone can help? Cheers Ali
The IIUG and IBM are working on it. It's getting attention all the way up and down IBM Information Management. There are issues beyond just the dead link that are being dealt with that are holding up a resolution, but it is getting attention and a resolution will happen. I just can't say when yet. Art Art S. This seems like a scam to me. Perhaps they had it free at one time but the only link I found was a "buy support" for innovator-c free edition. So you buy the support, then get the "free" edition. Tried to chat online with a sales rep and told them link not working, they said to call technical support. tried that and they said support for free and trials is limited and only available online. sent email, no response. notice how the developer edition does work but the so called free doesn't now. better to stick with a real free db like mysql/mariadb or postgres, all of which are plenty fast enough for lighter work loads. and myisam is still quite fast when used properly
Welcome to the wonderful world of a big company. Nevertheless, this is no scam. As already explained in this thread there is an issue with the free version. I totally agree that it's taking too long to solve and I think a proper message should have been put in the linked page. If currently your need is just for development, please use the developer edition. If you need this for production, please contact the person I already mentioned in this thread and explain the situation to her. Thanks for your understanding. I wasnt even aware it was having issues that long apparently weeks and weeks? even more likely that it's a gimmick or by design to get people to pay for support for the "free edition" what are the chance if I click on this "IBM Elite Support for Informix Innovator-C Edition Per Install, Unlimited Contacts SW Support 12 Months (D0D4ILL)" and add to cart, I will then be available to download the free innovator-c edition? Per the website: * Products acquired online will be available via download If I add to cart and try to download is the link STILL not going to work? I would hope not. That would be bad business indeed. The product is the same no? Whether support is bought or not is irrelevant, same product, same download. It takes weeks/months to fix a download link? I dont think so.. No reason to use the developer edition--you cant use it in prod. which is what the whole evalution was all about

eh i dont think its worth to argue about. they should open source it and make it easily available to evaluate or simply not bother trying to compete with other free solution like mysql
Ignore Hugh. He's obviously just a troll. Comparing Informix, any edition, to MySQL is like comparing a lumber mill to a handsaw. Sure the latter gets the job done for small jobs, and yes, the former is not cheap, but whoa, what a difference! Until the Innovator-C download is cleared up you can still evaluate the Developer edition for free. Downloads are easy from the IIUG web site. All I can see regarding what you have said is Art's (from 06/06/2012): "There are issues beyond just the dead link that are being dealt with that are holding up a resolution". I think it's clear that this situation is a little unsettling to those of us who are not "in the know". Where I work, we're currently building a future, mission-critical, strategy for one product based around Innovator-C and this could blow it out of the water, especially if management get windy about it. If we could be given a clue as to what the "issue beyond the dead link" is, and a statement - from IBM - as to what IBM are doing as regards resolving the issue and that there is no intention of withdrawing the product we'd appreciate it. As it is, there is some unhealthy speculation that it is to be withdrawn, and that needs to be stomped on ASAP and with authority. My 2c. Malc

It appears that the loud mouth trolls have caused IBM to rethink the restrictions. This will likely dilute the product for everyone. You will probably find your apps running out of locks or memory or buffers or some other problem when the IBM programmers get finished with the patches for C5. Thanks a bunch you whiners. I guess we are stuck with C4 now. -----Original Message----- From: malc_p Sent: Friday, June 08, 2012 8:47 AM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Fwd: Re: Innovator-C edition download links broken [27325] On 08/06/2012 14:21, Marcus Haarmann wrote: > Hi all, > > I have contacted out distrbutor and they checked with IBM. > The statement we got is in short: > They are developing a special part which enforces the restrictions. > Estimated time frame: 2 weeks. >

IBM took the original idea and added DB2 to the mix. Where the mis-remembering is happening with the original poster is not a "code-share" but feature integration/reimplementation, which is a big difference. Strange, I can download DB2 Express-C (free for develop, deploy and even distribute) database. Is that a sign we should migrate to that? :o) Maybe up and down is not enough, what about left and right. Anyhow, it IS a bad sign, IMHO. I still have the post-acquisition slide deck with the timeline showing the incorporation of DB2...though it also still showed XPS and Red Brick on there as well. So while it started with Informix, IBM did add to it, though I think it was largely a marketing exercise. My recollection is different. I was in a meeting in DC not long after IBM aquired Informix. Don somebody (he was prior Infomix.......who obviously had drank the blue kool-aid) was talking about how they were going to merge Informix and DB2 into arrow head. I don't recall any mention of xps merging with DB2 during the meeting. I remember quite well how upset the Informix users were that the overall goal at the time (Janet Perna's goal) was to get rid of Informix. ======================== Darren Jacobs Sr Analyst, Information Security Team Darren_Jacobs@carmax.com Wrk : 804.747.0422 x3221 Cell : 804.337.3683 ======================== From: "Fernando Nunes" <domusonline@gmail.com> To: ids@iiug.org, Date: 06/08/2012 11:25 AM Subject: Re: Arrowhead - was Re: Innovator-C edition do.... Fernando's right, however it was originally supposed to work out, We now have nearly everything in IDS 11.70 that was in XPS except (IMS) dbslices with their corresponding distributed databases and pure hash and bitmap indexes (and Forest of Trees indexes are a darn good substitute for both). IWA lets IDS outperform XPS, DB2, Oracle, SQL Server, and for some queries even Terradata, Netezza and Exadata for those types complex of queries for which XPS was famous. As far as distributed database, it was a useful idea when IDS was limited to ~2TB of data and machines didn't have more than 32 processor cores or 64GB of memory available. Today, IDS can handle databases up to ~128PB (over 12,000 times larger) and you can get machines with hundreds of cores and half a TB of main memory. Since IWA can run on a separate machine from the main IDS server you can actually get twice that horsepower applied to your data processing requirements. Art Art S. im troll because I think they will never beat mysql for a free solution? heh. i dont think so. mysql is actually the fastest when tuned properly for web only applications and with nosql interface now available even faster. notice how many websites are all using mysql/php. quite a lot. one of ibm major point they try to make is that mysql needs license for commercial use and innovator-c does not. wrong. there are several branches that are split off from oracle's mysql versions that are identical drop in replacements. if you want you get the source code and modify it as you need. you can make it just like you want, add to the parser, and etc. and no restriction on the # of processors or hardware/memory. if you ware argue that for oltp transactions sure informix and plenty of other databases are probably > than mysql but for simple light loads and especially web applications mysql/myisam is all you really need.

Size can be considered one of them. The need to refresh in two steps is another. The types of queries is another. The interesting part is the speed that some of these are being lifted or eliminated... Considering it's the third fixpack: - You can overcome the size issue just by adding nodes. Your calculations (1/2 TB) may not be exact (but let's not go there), but they don't take into account the clustering possibilities. So it comes down to cost... - The partition refresh - The mixed load *with simplicity* (some other solutions handle mix loads but are complex, others don't handle mix loads but are simple) My main concern is the limitations in some query types. Let's keep an eye for the next fixpacks! -- Fernando Nunes Portugal http://informix-technology.blogspot.com My email works... but I don't check it frequently... --00248c7118054ba20d04c1fd913d
Dear troll you may be 100% correct in all your assertions (or you may not) but either way you have missed the point. Say I am a young entrepreneur about to launch my once in a generation idea for the greatest web based service ever (have you met them? they all think this) If I build it on mysql (or postgres or whatever) and I AM actually brilliant AND my idea takes off AND I take over the web I am, at some point going to have to port to a grown up database at some vast expense in time as well as money. If, on the other hand, I use Innovator-C from the start, all I have to do is pay IBM some money to get enterprise - no porting required That, IMHO, is the point. Hi, when searching for a database system, which can hold multiple 100GB or some TB of data over the time, you need to have a rock solid DB, which allows in-place upgrade to new versions, replication, for OLTP row locking, different types of indexes, etc. This is not the case for any open source product we evaluated (at least not completely). And when you started with a product, it is not that easy to migrate. When a huge amount of data is involved, including special data types, blob data etc., it might be a real big project to modify the DB system. Postgres is going in the direction to be a system like that, but it is not complete. But all "new technology" databases, mostly on open source, are not capable to handle all of these requirements. That is why most of the companies choose well supported databases from IBM/Oracle/Microsoft etc. These are all available in express/small editions which allow a cheap start and then (when you have the money) to upgrade without big problems to a more scalable technology able to handle the amount of data you need. So it is not always open source or nothing. I am also a fan of open source stuff. Using it widely throughout our software setups. Projects like apache WS, JBoss AS, Tomcat, OTRS, Nagios, not to say anything about Linux are very often used. I also like to contribute when we find bugs. But when it comes to long living data, you would want to avoid nights and nights of copying data to new instances. There are very many reasons why somebody would pay for a DB. But, of course, it all depends what you are using the DB for. We are using also mysql DBs, but not for ~4000 parallel Users ! Dear Troll, When you make the statement: " Facebook uses MySQL and is already fairly mature" I wonder if you are aware of the big corner that Facebook has painted itself into by going the free route (understandable when they started up without much money) with a DBMS that does not scale too well. In other words, you get what you pay for. If you care to, you can read that same conclusion as stated by Michael Stonebraker himself at: < http://gigaom.com/cloud/facebook-trapped-in-mysql-fate-worse-than-death/> Facebook is fairly mature all right. I guess calling running 9,000 ! instances of memcachd just to keep up (with the number of concurrent transactions), as well as splitting their db systems into 4,000 shards. Even though they are not "at the mercy of Oracle or IBM" for these expensive licenses you are complaining about, I'll bet they are at the mercy of consultants paid big bucks by the hour and will end up spending more by the time they get themselves out of this pickle than they would have spent on obtaining the proper, scalable Enterprise DBMS in the first place.
