Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
Ali wanted ontape logical-log backups written to a file on IDS 10 (AIX); `ontape -a -t STDIO > logicallog` didn't work. Art suggested setting LTAPEDEV to a file, or to a directory so ontape auto-names files (e.g. host_servernum_Lognnnn), or using `ontape -a -t filepath`. A block-size error followed, and Art advised raising LTAPEBLK (64, 128, 256...) until accepted. Ali said the directory option appeared to be 11.x-only, and instead worked around it with a ksh script creating a timestamped file symlinked to the LTAPEDEV path and piping keystrokes to `ontape -a`; Karl confirmed a similar echo-piped approach under 9.4. No definitive single fix is recorded.

Hi,
Can anyone give me an idea to take logical log backup in file?
IDS 10 on AIX
I can take a level 0 backup by this command : ontape -s -L 0 0t STDIO > level0
but this command didn't work : ontape -a -t STDIO > logicallog
Regards
Ali
Several choices:
1. Set LTAPEDEV to a file
2. SET LTAPEDEV to a directory/filesystem and ontape wil lname the back
up files according to their contents and the server and host.
3. Use: ontape -a -t filepath

Thanks Art
But I got this error:
Performing automatic backup of logical logs.
The tape block size must be greater than the system page size
and a multiple of the system page size.InvalidLogbackup failed - function get
tranport buffer size failed code -1 errno 0
Program over.
My setting is :
LTAPEDEV /apps/db/llogs/log1 # a filename
LTAPEBLK 32
LTAPESIZE 0
So, try LTAPEBLK set to 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, etc until you find a
setting that works.

Thanks Art
I can't use "ontape -a -t ... "
I wrote this script :
#!/usr/bin/ksh
. /home/informix/env
backup_file=/apps/${INFORMIXSERVER}/llogs/${INFORMIXSERVER}_LLog_`date
+"%Y%m%d%H%%M%S`
touch ${backup_file}
chmod 660 ${backup_file}
ln -s ${backup_file} /apps/llogs/lloglink
echo '\\\\r n \\\\r' | ontape -a
gzip ${backup_file}
rm /apps/llogs/lloglink
and also set
LOGTAPEDEV /apps/llogs/lloglink
Regards
Ali
IF you set LTAPEDEV to the /apps/llogs directory, then ontape will manage
the filenames for you naming each logical log archive file something like:
<hostname>_<servernum>_Log<lognum>
so:
myhost_10_Log0000005335

I think this works for version 11 not 10.
I have checked in this environment but it didn't work.
