Why not? I (used to) have 1 raw partition of 1G on 2G scsi disk on solaris 2.5 when boot disk crashed. That was development environment so I didn't have last backup. I just dd that partition to file on another machine (other solaris, other DS, other disk...) and do some hacking (I forgot what) and I was able to save ALL of data.
