Opensource XBSA interface?
Posted in 2000
I found something to occupy my free time but was wondering if someone had already started a project like this.. Has anyone to anyone's knowledge begun the process of creating a C/C++ class that might implement the XBSA interface or provide the API in a format that could be used by a user database backup recovery tool like On-BAR? It seems the business model is.. "someone releases a specification.. someone develops an implemenetation, then overcharges for it or justifys it based on certification costs.. then someone develops an Opensource reference building on whatever opensource there is to support the effort." An XBSA interface to either an Informix instance, or MySQL seems way over due. Of course I could misunderstand the X/Open spec ramifications.. perhaps there are sticky legal problems with such a project getting started? I ask mainly since other than ADSM there doesn't appear to be an XBSA interface to any of the current storage managers on the market for Linux. Legato seems too mired in NT/2000 support and targeting a narrow part of the market.. Veritas looks like they might be moving in that direction, has anyone heard of such a move? I'd say the window of opportunity for a commerial product is narrowing rapidly.. the opportunity to gain brand name recognition that is.. and IBM appears to have the lead. Any ideas?
