If you buy Sun Hardware you Solaris for free with it. Solaris is superior to Linux. All the library fidling that has to be done on Linux to run any comercial app (IDS, DB2, Notes Domino) is a pain. Don't try to use Linux with comercial App. I don't see that Sun Boxes are expensive compared to IBM or HP. So why not. Life is easy when you choose Sun. Oh OK. So we have several commercial applications on our x86 Linux machines. I'll go remove them right now. LOL. We use both Gentoo and SuSE, and the commercial applications have performed flawlessly on our Linux servers as well as working with GUI applications that connect to them. In fact I had to beg our team to stop work long enough to reboot these servers after they had been up for 3 months. These same applications had their Windows versions running 3x-to-10x SLOWER than their Linux versions. ( We had to reboot to install hardware ) Sun had to start building x86 boxes even after Scott McNealy said they wouldn't go x86. He went with Linux, after swearing he wouldn't go Linux, had to give away his own OS, and then slapped SUN logos on a version of SUSE LINUX for sale to China. It's hard to argue with your "facts". I fail to see how Sun OS is "superior" to Linux, I do know Sun tried to push the I'm-a-Sun-druid-worship-Sun-is-god mentality, but does it really matter? What makes Sun relevant? JAVA? IBM is doing better with JAVA than SUN! :o) Incidentally, SuSE has given us the best kernels, so it might interest you where Sun's thinking was, they finally got with the Linux bandwagon. But SUN has a lot of catching up to do, maybe they will become relevant again, who knows. Novell had almost no reason to be in business when they bought SuSE, this was a real comeback story. But it's hard to understand how Sun has anything that differentiates them in the market to get them back to where they are even relevant, maybe they can become a great software distributor, but not much else. I fail to see how Sun >OS is "superior" to Linux, As I said I want to know from shops that are running Informix 9.x and RDS 7.3 on Linux with user counts. I could care less about your opinion of Sun. I know what Sun can do, but I do not know what Linux can do. There are plenty of Linux/Informix R&D testing shops but how many are really being used in production. I see very few posts out here from larger shops running on Linux. The one nice thing about Solaris/Sun is no finger pointing. We have an IBM/Linux box doing color separation for our graphics dept. IBM is blaming RH and RH is blaming the IBM raid controller. It never ends....and the bottom line is we lost the entire OS now several times.

I think you should be able to sign up thru the iiug website? > The one nice thing about Solaris/Sun is no finger pointing. We have forget about arguing with Tim - it's easier to convince a cat to play a banjo.
