Hi I've been watching this thread in growing amazement .. childlike. in fact, informix and Oracle have a lot of things in common: - they're both incredibly expensive. - they both try to attract corporate management to buy them by using expensive, complicated words that they now the boss won't understand .. - they both write manuals that don't even fit on my hard disk. in fact, I use the oracle paper manuals to heighten up my monitor... - they both use terms that tend to mystify things instead of clear them up, so everyone that finally understands it has the feeling of being very, very wise. ( Informix is worse in that. I get scared when I read the informix manuals. Who makes up those horrible datablade names ? Who invented the word "DataBlade" anyway ..Its just a plugin ! an extra. a module. a component) - they're both huge. There's only a few companies I can think of that really need that kind of a solution. and apparently, they both have a religious usergroup, willing to go on crusade and flame the mailinglist bouncing their chests. that's my 2 cents ... sorry bout that :-) *-pike-*

Compared with what? (Sybase, DB2?) Do you know the price for Informix (IIF.2000) on Linux? > - they both try to attract corporate management to buy them by using expensive, > complicated words that they now the boss won't understand .. They both deliver functionality corporations needs. -The marketing department(s) adds hype (sadly less at Informix). > - they both write manuals that don't even fit on my hard disk. in fact, I > use the > oracle paper manuals to heighten up my monitor... And how big is your disk? (Stay out of this Obnoxio;) I've got all the docs on one CD (More or less listed on http://www.informix.com/answers/english/alpha.htm) > - they both use terms that tend to mystify things instead of clear them up, The whole industry does... > so everyone that finally understands it has the feeling of being very, very > wise. If someone _does_ understands "it" -they're probably _are_ VERY wise. > ( Informix is worse in that. I get scared when I read the informix > manuals. Who > makes up those horrible datablade names ? They're good and I like them better than Sybase (11.x). If the word datablade causes you problems you're probably not working with development... > - they're both huge. I think you're being a bit tough on Informix documentation. I think the Informix manuals are amongst the best I've come across (particularly the OnLine v5 ones).
