There was a 'feature' in the early 5.x versions where you could not use SET EXPLAIN ON, resulting with that very error. I don't have the details to hand. Is there any reason you chose 5.02? Always sounds lame, but try a more recent version if you can. :-) Also I presume you upgraded your tools to 4.1x and loaded everything in the correct order (TEN - Tools, Engine, Network products)?
