Full back failed.
Posted in 2008
A user on Solaris 8 / IDS 7.31 saw ontape full archives abort around 70% with "function write to tape failed code -1 errno 32" and dd reporting a short write to /dev/rmt/0m. Respondents asked about tape media type and capacity and pointed to the ONCONFIG TAPESIZE setting. One suggestion to increase TAPESIZE was corrected: if TAPESIZE were reached, ontape would simply prompt for the next tape, so the error means the physical end of tape was hit before TAPESIZE — i.e. TAPESIZE is set larger than the tape's real capacity and should be lowered. The original poster never replied, so no confirmed fix is recorded.

Archive failed - function write to tape failed code -1 errno 32 dd: unexpected short write, wrote 0 bytes, expected 65536 In online.log, we can't see anything related to this error, it give us the prompt message: "Achive aborted." only. We tried several method to solve the problems. 1, to use the tape drive in other machine, still failed. 2, to restart the informix server, it can work for 1-2 days, then failed again. I am sure this platform's tape driver is OK .
Some more info please ? Type of medium ?? ( DAT ??) Capacity of medium (supports DDS3, DDS4 ?) Type of tape used ? Capacity of tapes native, compressed ? You use the 0m device (medium compression) Size of data to backup ? What is the device being used and what are your tape settings in onconfig ?? Keith
NETSKY LIAO,
I think the size of instance archive is more then that you specified for
TAPESIZE in onconfig file.Just increase the value(around 30% more) for TAPESIZE in onconfig file and
run the backup again.
Regards,
Nandkishor.

NO, if you have reached the size of TAPESIZE then the archive will
pause, rewind the tape and prompt for the next one to be inserted. The
error would indicate reaching the physical end of the tape BEFORE
TAPESIZE is reached.
Keith
The tape is not as big as the TAPESIZE parameter says that it is. You reached end-of-tape before having written TAPESIZE quantity of data.
