My apology, It's true that CHAR take up to 32,767 (ONLINE) or (32,511 for SE). It's however that if you use VARCHAR data the variable string is only 255 or 254 if the column is indexed. VARCHAR (<max length> [, <reserve length>]), HOPE THIS WILL REALLY HELP;) Binh PS: I will not be able to further entertain you since I am about to confuse even more people... -----Original Message----- From: aaz@leopard.com [mailto:aaz@leopard.com] Sent: Wednesday, July 21, 1999 4:26 PM To: Binh Thanh Nguyen; informix-list@iiug.org Cc: dbhelp@lynxhub.lz.att.com; Michael Shindle Subject: Re: infromix Thanks for the response, I am looking at the Infomix PDF doc on sql syntax and it states: "SIZE: The number of bytes in the char or nchar column: you must specify an integer value between 1 and 32,767 bytes inclusive." Hence I don't see how char(2500) is illeagal cause its way below 32K. It is odd how i can do a successful column creation but when I insert into it it gives -280 that the string exceeeds 256 bytes. Any ideas? Is there a admin server config that overrides large user column specified sizes to save space? thx -aaz At 03:46 PM 7/21/99 -0700, Binh Thanh Nguyen wrote: > >Hi, > >How did you define the field ? > >TEXT or CHAR ?.
