I know those technical workshops for IDS, I even advertised them on http://informix-zone.com. Again, this is not the same as the 'DB2 on Campus' program. ! There is a whole team visiting universities around the world and teaching/promoting DB2. This is an investment into the future. The same has to be done by IBM for IDS ! I appreciate the free technical workshops, no doubt about that. But it is something completely different, it attracts existing IDS customers, not students.

Since Informix-on-Linux, 1998, ten years, there have been a lot of lost opportunities to get IDS to students in a serious way--not unlike the java phenomenon. A college freshmen in 1998 missed 4 years of IDS, graduated, and the same thing has happened 2 more times now, again in 2002, and in 2006. These same people were exposed to java, and other databases, there really was no reason why Informix was missed other than a really ignorant marketing department that does not get how important developers are. You have to get people aware of IDS early and often. Yes, there were some "educational" discounts and really tepid educational efforts but not the way MySQL, Java, and other technology leaders have made a serious effort to get students and the next generation of IT in to Informix. None of the kids I work with know what Informix is, and most will not even know why I would "bring up an old product like that.".
