Need Help - Deadlock (ISAM 143)

Does any one have a work around or have some insight into my problem? While doing inserts into my informix (501UD) tables, I am getting the informix error: -691=Missing key in referenced table for referential constraint. I also get the ISAM error: -143=Deadlock Detected. This problem occurs when there are five users are running code that does about two hundred inserts in one transaction. The constraint error does not make sense because prior similar successful inserts use the same value for the flagged column.
