VT100 to Wyse 50 termcap problem

My company has an Informix 4GL application with screens that were originally developed for use on DEC VT100 terminals. The application uses bordered windows that use the full 80 column width of the terminal. We now have client with a significant investment in Wyse 50 terminals. Since the Wyse 50 requires two extra columns for graphics capabilities, our screens no longer fit on the terminal (FORMS error -1138). There is no time to go through the code and modify all the forms/windows. I modified the wyse50 termcap entry to disable sg#1, gs & ge and set gb to use ++++-| for borders. The screens now look reasonably good and display properly, however the first character of MESSAGE/ERROR lines is not being displayed. If I remove ZG#1 (characters occupied by the ZA capability) the intensity video attributes get hosed up (but the message displays properly). Does anyone know a workaround to the "missing first character of message" problem? I would like to preserve the intensity video attributes for the application.
