Fuzzy asked when Informix lifted the 8-character username limit, having got errors -578 on 7.12 but long names working on IDS 2000. Art Kagel replied that long identifiers arrived in 9.20: identifiers grew from 18 to 128 bytes and usernames from 8 to 32 bytes. Fuzzy thanked him. Solved.

Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out when usernames/userid's where allowed to be
longer than eight characters.
In 7.12 (yeah, I know that's old), I used to get good old -576 errors
if I tried to use ids longer than 8 characters. Now, in IFS2000, I
can go crazy (e.g. I have a used "bloodylongusername" successfully.)
Does anyone know when (i.e. what version) the limit was
removed/increased?
Ciao

Long identifiers were introduced in 9.20 (IDS.2000/IIF.2000). All
identifiers (ie tablenames, columnnames, databasenames, etc) are now 128
bytes long rather than 18 bytes and usernames are now restricted to 32 bytes
rather than 8.

Thanks Art, that's exactly what I needed.
