I also don't know about the 7.1 story (gee, we Informixites are 0 for 2 now) but one thing that's helpful to know: as of version 6, a product can be re- installed (i.e. using the installonline script) without being re-read from the media. In older versions, you couldn't do this because once you branded an executable (using the install script), it couldn't be re-branded. Now, if your permissions etc. are messed up, you can re-run installonline (as root) and it will straighten out all your permissions. Just an FYI.
