RE: IDS on NT user authentification

Peter WHen a user connects to the engine, Informix does a Microsoft API call to determine if the user is valid. Where it gets that information is determined on where (how) Informix was installed. (I am not familiar with NT in a Novell environment). In a pure NT environment you can install Informix locally or in the Domain. That determines the prime location for user request. I believe you can configure security so that you can install informix locally but it will use the Domain user table. (Another area I am unfamiliar with but expect to need to get to know over the next few months). If NT will look at the Novell user table for authentication, then you only need to set up the users once. Murray Wood PS I am led to believe that the Microsoft API only returns all users and Informix needs to determine whether the user is valid. Since each connection results in the full list of users being sent to Informix, having a large number of users in the user database will cause database connect times to be very long!! -----Original Message----- From: Peter Zinckgraf [SMTP:peter@radio-regenbogen.de] Sent: Saturday, July 17, 1999 4:56 AM To: informix-list@iiug.org Subject: IDS on NT user authentification Hi there, a software company is about to install an NT box with IDS (w/g Ed. 7.30 into our Novell 4 network. They told me IDS relies on _local_ NT users to authentificate database users who are primarily logged into NDS. Keeping track of two accounts for each user (one NDS account and a local one on the NT box) is not really an option for me as an admin. I'm thinking about NDS for NT, which imports entire NT domains into NDS and redirects domain authentification requests to NDS, where all users, their passwords and their rights (e.g. NT group membership) can be managed nicely in one place. Now the big question: Will IDS support such a constellation? And the smaller question: Will I be able to run IDS without enabling TCP/IP on my entire network? IPX/SPX is humming along very smooth and fast on its own... Thanks, Peter Zinckgraf PS: I've asked that questions in novell groups before, but the folks there are not too familiar with Informix as it does not run under Netware.
