Call for New Group
Posted in 1999
This is a joke/social thread, not a technical problem. Someone facetiously proposed creating a newsgroup "comp.databases.informix.art-s-kagel" since so many questions get directed at Art Kagel. Replies argued against splitting him off, noting the group's value comes from many contributors answering. Kagel agreed, saying he always redirects private email back to comp.databases.informix for broader input, and Marco Greco echoed that private help requests are overwhelming and should go to the newsgroup/FAQ. The thread then drifted into XPS/Red Brick chat and the etymology of "Schaefer". No technical issue or fix is involved.

Topics: General Discussion
Call for discussion for creating a newsgroup "comp.databases.informix.art-s-kagel". Charter of group: Since most of the questions are already addressed to Him, why not? Voting: Voting will be in a two week period from the 24th of Sept. to 8th of Oct. During this period, please email your votes to kagel@bloomberg.net, with a subject line containing either "yes" or "no". Any duplicate or amibiguous votes, or votes received outside this period, will be discarded. NOTE: Sorry Art if people actually flood your mailbox. :) -- Rob Wilson rwilson@ntsource.com
I personally don't think discussions with Art should be seperated out. I feel that keep Art (and questions for him) in the general Informix discussion benefits the entire group and reduces the number of repeated posts. Keep up the good work Art! S.W. Here are my thoughts on this: We all can respect the fact that Art is a very valuable resource to this news group in that he provides many of us including myself with helpful information and guidance to our informix problems. With this in mind, we also should respect the fact that many others who use this news group also are very valuable to helping and providing information and guidance to other informix professional. After all ... this is what a news group is all about ... right? Having a group dedicated to Art is a very nice thought but I am sure that Art does not want to feel pressured nor be bogged down with questions just dedicated to him ... not to mention that many others may provide the same answer as Art can within this group which is what happens now ... and may provide an answer before Art can get a chance to respond which is what the power of this news group is all about ... right? If there is something that you feel only Art can answer ... I am sure that you can submit an email to him directly ... other than that ... I think that your chances are better suited (no offense Art in any way) towards the news group in helping others with problems that you are facing and the solutions so that others may learn from your troubles and can better prepare and resolve for the worst ... if it happens. Besides, I am sure that many of us have gone through some of the problems that are posted to this news group that other than Art can help solve for that individual. These are just my thoughts ... please do not take anything offensive. Lloyd AJ Wilson. Indeed Lloyd, while I do not mind a reasonably SMALL number of private queries, anyone who has send me such a request knows that I begin every response with a suggestion that they post to CDI where I will eventually see it anyway, as that is the way to get the broadest range of opinions on the problem and to bring in experience I may not have. Heck Jonathan is a FAR better 4GL and DBD reference than I as Tim Scheaffer is for XPO and I'm the worst when it comes to PC connectivity (Windoze gives me hives so I avoid it when I can ;-) ). Now please don't take this as a 'me too' post, (I've been quiet enough since I joined the company, and that's ok by me), but that is a painful point for me. Of late I have received at least 5 personal requests of help on informix on linux for each single howto/what's-wrong query on linux-informix. I take it that this all descends from the fact that my informix ibcs howto is still on the air, and I wonder whether Kurt as the same problem. At any rate, while everyone enjoyes a bit of visibility, this is becoming a sizeable part of my day, and I honestly haven't got the bandwidth. What's more, even though my sig has an explicit pointer to the faq, and most of the question really call for a RTFM (and are not even linux specific), the average length of such requests is 3 more emails, the bad part being that the question seldom gets repeated on cdi or linux-informix. I don't know - maybe the problem is that there's no quick informix primer out there. I guess what I'm saying is, don't count on it, Art. Sorry for the rant. David, I have very little to give you in the way of stuff for XPS, as my work in that realm has stopped for a while. I know there is a port of XPS to Linux, but I haven't found the right person inside Informix to send me a copy. I have several very cool tools in development for XPS, but need a bit more time to perfect them before releasing them. Unfortunately without a big budget for hardware and the typical XPS license this will have to wait until I see XPS again in a shop that spent the big money on it. As to 8.3, I do know there were many things brought in that were finishing touches if not feature additions to bring compatibility to 8.x with 7.x, but no particulars. It's also a shame that because of the difficulty of the sales crews to sell 8.x they are now being told to emphasize RedBrick for DW and I guess somewhere XPS fits in. Bummer too because RedBrick is not MPP, but simply fast SMP to compete with the cheezy Oracle SMP DW. Which isn't really a competition at all--Oracle is so far behind these products it isn't even in the same category. I think Oracle is at least 10 years behind Informix now in technology and engine design. The latest SQL-Server from Microsoft is probably more advanced than Oracle too. Hey Art, You are way too kind in your thinking me worthy of XPS stuff, I'm only a little over a year on experience with XPS, and still feel like a newbie with it. XPS is a big mountain to climb, so anything I offer is still in the foothills compared to what others may know. The bummer is that very few if any of these more experienced XPS'ers show up here in c.d.i. But back to your lifetime achievement award. :-) I enjoy immensely your posts, and learned some really valuable stuff just the other day about RAID. Great stuff, keep up the flurry of brain dumps we can all find something to grab and use. Tim ( BTW "Schaefer" is German I'm told for shepherd, a "schaefe" being a sheep. It only needs one F in this rendition. :-) Any Germans listening in please correct me if I'm wrong, this is what they told me when I was in Europe last year. ) "Art S. You're right that "Schäfer" (or "Schaefer" if you cannot display Umlaut characters) means "sheperd", but the German word for "sheep" (singular) is "Schaf", the plural is "Schafe". BTW, Schäfer is a pretty common last name in Germany. Hi Richard, Thanks for this info, it's always a fascinating subject for me. To add confusion to my name, I'm actually adopted! My heritage is actually Scottish-Irish, so when I was in Germany they look at me and think this guy doesn't look German. :-) I had a fun time though while visiting all over Germany, installing software. You have a very amazing country. My biggest disappointment though was not buying some coffee cups and shot glasses at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. I thought when I got to Hamburg that I'd be able to find something similar but to no avail. Someday I will return to get those cobalt blue shot glasses and coffee cups. They are still the most original I've seen.
