HP-UX: Strange Unix logical volume status

Hello, I am trying to remove and reinstall a logical volume '/dev/vgsap/lvol5' that is a character device. It was successfully used as a raw device by Informix, but Informix now ('raw device non-existant') doesn't recognize it. When I try an 'lvremove' on the LV, I get the following message: 'Can't get lv number of logical volume /dev/vgsap/lvol5'. When I try to remove it through the HP-UX utility 'SAM', I get the following message: 'There is an unmounted filesystem on logical volume 'lvol5' volume group 'vgsap'. The last known mount directory and modification time are shown: Thurs. Sept 19 13:48:31 1996'. From my limited understanding, a filesystem is either mounted to a logical volume or not. What is meant by the 'unmounted filesystem' on the logical volume message and the 'cannot get the lv number' message? How can I remove the logical volume (I know how to reinstall it) since it was already an Informix raw device? What Unix configuration parameters can I be missing? When I issue the 'lvdisplay' command, I get the following info: LV Name /dev/vgsap/lvol5 VG Name /dev/vgsap LV Permission read/write LV Status available/syncd Mirror copies 0 Consistency Recovery MWC Schedule parallel LV Size (Mbytes) 2500 Current LE 625 Allocated PE 625 Stripes 0 Stripe Size (Kbytes) 0 Bad block on Allocation strict 'bdf' confirms that the LV is not mounted to a filesystem and 'swapinfo' confirms that it is not swapspace.
