Data Encryption

Hi all, Wanted to know if there is a way to encrypt the data on a column on the DB side? Basicly, I has a password column and what it to encrypt the values. Any ideas? Or would it just be easier to have the client encript the data before inserting to the DB? I'm running IIF v9.20 on VA Linux. Thanks in advance. IMHO I would encrypt the passwords on the client side. I use a message digest function (MD5) to encryted to password the second the user types it in. The program would then just store and compare hashed values instead of real passwords. <mdelerme@my-deja.com> wrote in message news:8ls8vq$k7b$1@nnrp1.deja.com... > Hi all, > > Wanted to know if there is a way to encrypt the data on a column on the > DB side? Currently that is how we are doing it on one system. The question was posed to me if it could be done on the DB side by adding a constraint. Hi, How can I encrypt the data in the table. We are running Informix 8.2UD5X1. * Sent from AltaVista http://www.altavista.com Where you can also find related Web Pages, Images, Audios, Videos, News, and Shopping. Smart is Beautiful
Unless you have 9.xx and build a data encryption DataBlade, or find one to buy, you will have to encrypt the data before inserting it. If you do that be careful, character columns are DEFINED as containing a NULL if the first byte is a zero (0x0) byte. Also if the column can contain zero bytes in other characters your host variables will have to be defined as FIXCHAR or their contents will truncate on load at the first zero byte. Art S.
