I think the key part of your observation is 'The file "flename" was a normal text file'. If you are loading data into a BYTE (as opposed to TEXT) column, you cannot load an arbitrary text file. You have to load a file which is in the required format, which means that each byte blob consists of an even number of hexadecimal digits on a single line with a delimiter (normally '|') after it. In your case, that's all it would consist of -- if you had other fields, then the blob would be formatted like that in the middle of the other fields.
