How can I use 32Gb of ram in IDS 9.4
Posted in 2010
A user with IDS 9.40.UC7 on SuSE 8.2 (IBM x445, 8 CPUs, 32 GB RAM) wanted the engine to use more memory, but raising BUFFERS above 280000 caused startup failure with 'shmat: [ENOMEM] out of available data space'. Respondents pointed out that the 'UC' build is the 32-bit edition, which is address-space limited, so a 64-bit (FC) Informix build is needed to exploit 32 GB; one also noted SuSE 8.2 itself defaults to a low memory limit and would need kernel tuning, recommending a newer, still-supported OS release. No follow-up confirming the outcome is recorded.

I have IDS9.4 on Suze 8.2 on a IBM 445 with 8 CPU and 32 Gb of ram
How Can I use more of the Ram ?
I have tried playing around with buffers but if I go past 280000 the instance
dosn't come on like and complains :
Segment locked: addr=0x44000000, size=1450098688

You're not using a 64 bit version. Is there a 9.40.FCn version
available?

Mostly, when you see programmers, they arent doing anything. One of the
attractive things about programmers is that you cannot tell whether or not
they are working simply by looking at them. Very often theyre sitting there
seemingly drinking coffee and gossiping, or just staring into space. What the
programmer is trying to do is get a handle on all the individual and unrelated
ideas that are scampering around in his head.

SuSE 8.2 is by default maxed to 4 GB (if I remember that number right,
long time since I ran this release) so Kernel has to be tuned, better:
go to a more current SuSE version, because 8.2 is out of patches since
several years now.
As already said, you need a 64Bit Informix release

are you running 32-bit IDS or 64-bit IDS?

they are working simply by looking at them. Very often they're sitting

seemingly drinking coffee and gossiping, or just staring into space.
What the

I have IDS9.4 on Suze 8.2 on a IBM 445 with 8 CPU and 32 Gb of ram
How Can I use more of the Ram ?
I have tried playing around with buffers but if I go past 280000 the
instance
dosn't come on like and complains :
Segment locked: addr=0x44000000, size=1450098688
shmat: [ENOMEM][12]: out of available data space, check system memory
parameters (e.g. MAXMEM)
My onconfig is :

You can't use much more without switching to a 64bit version of Informix.
Since 9.40 us out of support as of last September, and has been out-of-sales
for over a year prior to that, you'll have to upgrade. The current 64bit
release is 11.50.FC6W3
