Re: IIUG - Linux and Informix

So what's your point? Just kidding! ( You get the record for long posts :-) Seriously, Very good words Nils. Thanks for staying with this. If Informix was seriously listening to any of this, they would have run the numbers as you have done, and probably in more detail. Whatever the priorities Informix has right now, they really need to get a pulse on the market. The Linux port should be a decision based on the obvious benefit to all parties, and prosperity for all. Your arguments and sound reasoning are enough. One other thing, I agree with the majority of what you said, and wanted to add: The decision to do the Linux port should also be made without regard to any consensus here. After reading your post, it became clear to me that seeking consensus from a group is an easy way out for Informix, to suggest a lack of interest is the reason they didn't port, among other excuses. Building consensus in the real world is the place to make things happen, not in discussion groups or user group conventions. This of course is based on the theory that the decision would be based on "interest" from customers. Real marketing never waits for customers to get interested, it generates interest on its' own. Linux already has the momentum to make this an easy decision, an easy campaign. Informix needs to answer these posts directly, not through some veiled shroud and participate in active dialog. To give one sheepish response to all of this is not acceptable. But talk alone will not get it done, even with sound, simple arithmetic. There needs to be some real leadership coming from Informix, to just do it. If there are any real men or women left at Informix I hope they will wake up, stand up, speak up, and get it done. And then let us know where to find the finished product. Tim -- Tim Schaefer \\\\|// tschaefe@mindspring.com (6 6) ------------------------oOOo---( )---o00o--------- http://www.inxutil.com
