You should do oninit -i, since it's the first time you want to start
that new
instance.
BTW, you don't need to create rootdbspace yourself. Just have the correct
information in your onconfig file. And make sure SERVERNUM value is unique
on your system.

If you want to start a new instance (Initialize)
you need to give "oninit -iv" (the i is for initialize, the v is for verbose)

I Hope "SHMBASE 0x700000010000000" should be set in the onconfig file... Already one demo instance (sportage1) is running on this AIX host and it does not show any IPCs. how can i make the second instance running in this setup.. Your help is highly appreciated. Thanks Saravanan
Your log file shows server can't access chunk file "online_root".
Please make sure you can access this file and assign proper permissions to it.
Then bring up server as user "informix"

The first time you bring up an IDS instance you must initialize the root
chunk by starting the oninit with the '-i' flag.

That's very odd. IDS ALWAYS creates at least two shared memory segments (except on HPUX with RESIDENT -1). Art Art S. AHHHHH!!!!! That's the key, you didn't change the environment variable
ONCONFIG which is where oninit looks to find the name of the root chunk!
The last oninit -i probably trashed the root chunk for the first instance.
If that instance is still online, you can take an ontape -s -L 0 archive
just to be safe. Then I would shutdown the first instance and try to
restart it. If it doesn't start or is not in the condition that you left it
you can shutdown and restore the archive to get the first instance back.
To initialize and run the first instance you need to set and export the
ONCONFIG environment var to the second instance's onconfig file.

What is the name of the ONCONFIG file? Do you have the ONCONFIG environment
variable properly set to this name in the startup environment? Post the
terminal output of the oninit -iv and also the MSGPATH file contents
starting with the startup messages.
