force DBSPACETEMP
Posted in 2015
David (IDS 11.70.FC7) asked whether DBSPACETEMP can be forced per user/session from inside the server, e.g. via sysdbopen or SQL, since the client is a Cognos app whose environment can only be changed on a service restart. Paul Watson and Art Kagel said there's no direct SQL way: DBSPACETEMP must be exported in the client environment (.profile, /etc/profile, or a launch script keyed on user id), which overrides the ONCONFIG value. Art suggested filing an IBM RFE; Mark Scranton later pointed to a developerWorks article on sysdbopen as a possible avenue, though he hadn't used it for this. No confirmed server-side solution was reported.

Hi, We are running informix 11.70.FC7. Is there a way to force a session name to use a specific DBSPACETEMP? Can this environment variable be set via sql? We are trying to find a way, perhaps via sysdbopen that if a specific user name connects then set their DBSPACETEMP to a certain temp space? Thank You, --David --f46d0434c0ba7f72ca050d1c38f2
AFAIK not directly export DBSPACETEMP prior to starting the session ? Cheers Paul > Hi, > > We are running informix 11.70.FC7. Is there a way to force a session name > to use a specific DBSPACETEMP? We want to force and set DBSPACETEMP when the session connects. We cannot modify the environment variables during the day. Any other way to force a session to use a specific DBSPACETEMP? --David On Tue, Jan 20, 2015 at 4:49 PM, Paul Watson <paul@oninit.com> wrote: > AFAIK not directly > > export DBSPACETEMP prior to starting the session ? > > Cheers > Paul > > > Hi, > > > > We are running informix 11.70.FC7. DBSPACETEMP can be set into each user's environment to a different value than the one in the ONCONFIG file or in the server's environment and that will take precedence for this user's sessions. So, you can set it into the user's .profile, .bash_profile, etc. or /etc/profile with logic to set it appropriately for each user by user id. Another option, if users are starting applications using scripts, would be to set the environment by userid in the script before launching the client program executable. Art Art S. Thank you Art. Yes I know we can use the .profile options. Though in this case it is a cognos application and they can only make changes when they restart their services. Still it would be nice if setting the DBSPACETEMP and other variables could be controlled within the Informix server via sysdbopen or other systable settings. I can only suggest that you put in an RFE (Request for Enhancement). Here's the link to the RFE page at IBM: https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rfe/execute?use_case=changeRequestLanding Look and see if there is a request already that's similar enough and either vote for that or enter a new on. Once you've entered the RFE, post it here so others can go vote on it if they think it's useful. Art Art S. Another method to consider, although I've never used this to modify an individual session by username: sysdbopen. This originally was an XPS feature ported to IDS that would allow a number of "things" to be set when a session connects to a database (thus, the name sysdbopen). Prior to this, i-spy had to be used to catch incoming connections. Lots of detail here: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/data/library/techarticle/dm-1109sysdbopen/ Mark Scranton The Mark Scranton Group www.markscranton.com "All Informix ... all the time."
