Informix's user definition isn't what it used to be. Recent licensing discussions with Informix at our shop were quite disappointing, to say the least. They were quite inflexible and insisted on trying to convert our engines to "minimum users per CPU" licensing - even though the engines we wanted to upgrade were purchased without any such restrictions. Be careful also if you are using anything that could be considered a "multiplexing front-end". Make sure you know what the licensing rights to upgrade were on the original software you are trying to upgrade. Our understanding of the older products was that the license permitted a set number of concurrent user connections to the database. If you end up converting your existing engines into a single product with more users, be sure that you can live with the new restrictions. If your existing licenses have liberal user definitions and upgrade priviledges, you may end up having to keep the old licenses and run 4 instances of Informix on the new server.
