SHMBASE

Greetings,
I'm running IDS 9.4 UC3 on an AIX box with 5.1.0.0 ML 5100-04. The machine
notes indicate my SHMBASE value should be, 0x30000000L. When I attempt to
bring up the engine with, oninit -v, I get a fatal error in shared memory
creation. If I change the SHMBASE value to, 0x30000000, I can bring the
engine online. However, over the last couple of days the machine has been
running out of memory and I was wondering if the value of, 0x30000000, might
be causing the problem. My other values related to memory are as follows:
SHMVIRTSIZE 512000
SHMADD 32
SHMTOTAL 1048576
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you Bogdan. I checked the online.log and the resident + virtual
segments were greater than my SHMTOTAL. I modified my resident segments
(BUFFERS, LRUS, LOGBUFF, PHYSBUFF, LOCKS) and the engine is now up and
running. Thanks again.
Mike

Greetings,
AFAIK, the meaning of these three parameters is:
SHMVIRTSIZE - the initial memory segment size (shared memory) in KBytes
SHMADD - the size of the next allocated segments in KBytes
SHMTOTAL - the total amount of shared memory to be used by the instance in
KBytes
I'm pretty sure that as soon the instance will require more than 512MBytes
will attempt to allocate other memory segments, each having 32KBytes with
the net result of exceeding the number of allowable segments/memory.
Please increase the SHMADD value and post the exact errors from online.log.
Regards,
Bogdan BOTEZ.

32-bit Informix on 32-bit AIX has some inherent limitations. The most
significant affecting you probably concerns the number of shared memory
segments. I apologize, it's been some time when I last went through this
exercise, but I believe the maximum segments is 11. It is possible to
increase this somewhat be setting an environment variable EXTSHM=ON and
setting another variable I believe is SHMLBA_EXTSHM. Here's the real tricky
part. You need to configure your instance with the various memory settings
so you utilize entire memory segments. AIX allocates segments in 256MB
segments. If one of your memory allocations doesn't use the entire segment,
the remaining memory in the segment is unusable. However, you've just used
one of your 11 segments.
There is information on the web that discusses this. I'm pretty sure I
posted something regarding this between one and two years ago. The easiest
solution is to upgrade to 64-bit AIX and Informix.
Regarding the SHMBASE, I don't recall this being an issue.
