RE: Automatic backup of the Logical logs on UNIX server

There is nothing wrong.
Your logical logs are backed up. You can see this in the column flags. The B
indidates that. If you see the B it means that the logical log can be used
again. (Even if you see 100 % used)

Subject: Automatic backup of the Logical logs on UNIX server
Hi everybody!
I'm using online Dynamic Server 7.3 on UNIX ( solaris 2.7).
My problem is this : I'm using the command "ontape -a" to make an
automatic backup of my logicals logs.Everything goes well but when i
start onmonitor => status => logical logs, it display this information :
PHYSICAL LOG:
Buffer Bufsize Bufused Numpages Numwrites pages/IO
P-1 16 5 36804 2673 13.77
Phybegin Physize Phypos Phyused % Used
10003f 500 313 21 4.20
LOGICAL LOG:
Buffer Bufsize Bufused Numrecs Numpages Numwrites Recs/Page
Pages/IO
L-3 16 0 530486 17200 2954
30.84 5.82
INDIVIDUAL LOG FILES:
Number Flags Uniqid Dbspace Pages Used
% Used
1 U-B---- 101 rootdbs 250 250
100.00
2 U-B---- 102 rootdbs 250 250
100.00
3 U-B---- 103 rootdbs 250 250
100.00
4 U-B---- 104 rootdbs 250 250
100.00
As you can see, it say that the logical logs are 100% used!! I'm sure
that the logical logs have been correctly backed up so it must be a
problem with the display..
Any idea what's wrong ?
regards,
David Van Wallendael
yes but with the version 5.0, informix reset the flag to 0% used...And the flag
was F instead of B
PHYSICAL LOG:
Buffer Bufsize Bufused Numpages Numwrites pages/IO
P-1 8 5 253337 36205 7.00
Phybegin Physize Phypos Phyused % Used
1001a2 750 625 13 1.73
LOGICAL LOG:

INDIVIDUAL LOG FILES:

15 F------ 0 rootdbs 250 0 0.00
16 F------ 0 rootdbs 250 0 0.00
So what's the utitility of "%used" if it shows always 100% ?
Is this a bug ?

Nothing is wrong here. Your Informix 5.0 and 7.3 both are nice (AFAS Log
Flags are concerned - cannot comment about the other aspects). This is a
slight change from 5.0 to 7.3 - was changed in-between, where? I don't
know.)
Utility of 100 % Used - what's the use of 0%? Something is better than
nothing!
Well, this can be useful in tracking the logical log usage if you take log
backup at fixed time, not when it's 100 % full.
I take logical log backup on disk everyday and that way I can compare the
relative use of the database, normally.
Regards,
Nick.

Change in 7.10 aroung UC1-ish.
It means that onlog can still be used to examine the logical log.
This is needed for users and more importantly Technical Support.

Does it mean that in 5.x, 6.x, we cannot examine the logs once it's backup
up?
I've not tried it on 5.x, just curious.

Just to clarify and gather the responses. This was a change in
IDS 7.xx so that onlog could be used to examine all ofthe logs on
disk not just the current log as was possible with 5.xx. IDS 7.xx
only marks the log free and decrements its %used the instant it is
recycled for reuse so it is rare indeed to see the 'F' flag for
free except immediately after enabling a newly added log file.
This is not a bug but a feature. It shows that the log has been
backed up and what % of the log was used at the time the next log
became current (<100% if onmode -l was used to switch logs for
some reason).
