Identical Instances Same Server
Posted in 2011
David asked whether two identical Informix instances (same chunk paths/names, e.g. /usr/informix/chunk_1) could run simultaneously on one Solaris 10 box, so ON-Bar restores wouldn't need chunk renaming. The consensus: impossible on a single OS image, since two files can't share one path. Suggested alternatives were a redirected restore with a mapping file to rename/re-path chunks (e.g. /usr/informix/srvr1/...), relative chunk paths (noted as dangerous), SDS secondaries sharing chunks (rejected as the instances had to be independent), or Solaris non-global zones/VMs/LPARs giving each instance its own filesystem root. No way to avoid these was found.

Hello,
We are running Informix 11.50.FC6 on Solaris 10. I am wondering if it is
possible to have identical instances on the same UNIX server up at the same
time. For example, we have 1 production server and would like to use onbar
(without renaming chunks on the restore) to do 2 restores to a second
server. So the end product would be 2 live restored instances on the same
server. The challenge is that both instances would need to have identical
chunk paths and names - exactly the same as it exists on the original
Informix instance. Is there any way to accomplish this? Chunk names on the
original server are something like:
/usr/informix/root_dbs
/usr/informix/log_dbs
/usr/informix/chunk_1
/usr/informix/chunk_2
/usr/informix/chunk_3
etc...
Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated,
David

Look into a redirected restore, you can rename the files underneath the =
chunks with this.
Otherwise, no you cannot have two identical instances on the same =
machine. =20

Please think about what you are asking. Can you have, in any other context,
two different files residing at the same path? Can I build several houses
in the same location?
Just to be clear... No.

Hi David,
If you want to use 2 instances on the same machine that use the same
chunks, why not use a primary instance and an SDS instance that allows
you to have 2 instances on the same machine with the same disk space
(sharing the chunks). This way, you do no need to restore using onbar
nor ontape.
Both instances see the same chunks. Each instance has its own ONCONFIG file.
Is this what you want?

Only if you use relative chunk names:
./root_dbs
./log_dbs
...
which is _REALLY_ danger and not recommended
or
ask Chuck Norris I'm sure he can have two instances you are asking :o)

Hi,
I really wanted to have 2 distinct (not related) instances so SDS would not
be an option.
Thank You,

Sorry, in a weird mode today. The only way I can think of to do this would
be, as Bruce suggests, with some kind of VM or LPAR of the system in to
multiple logical machines with separate filesystem roots.

Thank you all for the idea of using relative chunk names. The challenge is
that the original instance does not use relative paths so I don't think I
would be able to use that now.
I also didn't want to do the redirected restore option of renaming the
chunks because then I would end up with different chunk names on each
server.
I guess I was "dreaming" of something that doesn't exist yet :-)

David.
Using the Informix zones will not require use of relative pathing we do this
in our dev. Environments run as many as 8 zone on a single sun/solaris box as
you are looking to do. You will want to use non-global zones so each zone can
have the same device names each having it's own I/P for that zone.

Bruce, Art,
Thank you for the idea of uzing Zones. Yes we also use zones for having
multiple instances and servers on one physical SUN server. Great minds
think alike. That was actually my first suggestion and the UNIX sys-admin
group pushed back saying I should first try and find a way to do it in on
one server - i.e. one less zone/server for them to maintain :-)

The only other alternative is to change the chunk paths. Use something more
like:
/usr/informix/srvr1/root_dbs
/usr/informix/srvr1/log_dbs
/usr/informix/srvr1/chunk_1
/usr/informix/srvr1/chunk_2
/usr/informix/srvr1/chunk_3
/usr/informix/srvr2/root_dbs
/usr/informix/srvr2/log_dbs
/usr/informix/srvr2/chunk_1
/usr/informix/srvr2/chunk_2
/usr/informix/srvr2/chunk_3
/usr/informix/srvr3/root_dbs
/usr/informix/srvr3/log_dbs
/usr/informix/srvr3/chunk_1
/usr/informix/srvr3/chunk_2
/usr/informix/srvr3/chunk_3
if you use a mapping file for the redirected restores, the process of
refreshing the several copies is simple.

But can this be done, even in theory, on a single copy of the OS? I don't
believe this could ever exist. If the pathnames must be identical, then
you'd have two programs using the same file for different purposes. The
database can not be kept in a consistent state in that case, no matter how
cleverly things are programmed. You must have either two different copies
of the OS (hardware partitions or virtual machines or Solaris zones or
some equivalent, or you'll have to change the pathnames, or you'll have to
use relative paths. I can not think of any other options.

My only suggestion would be to look at partition the
box. While you are running on the same hardware
you have divided it into two complete systems.

Forgive me if someone has already mentioned, but what about SDS?
Or are you wanting the data to change between the instances after the restore?

Mark,
Yes SDS was already mentioned. Though I wanted to be able to do 2 distinct
restores of the same original Informix instance and have both unrelated
restores as distinct instinces on the same server. Though mostly people
already replied that they do not think there is a way to do it.
Part of my thought (which I realize I didn't mention before) was that since
we use soft links and each Informix chunk really points to a different raw
device on some storage system that somehow based on some environment
settings I could manage a tweak. Though I don't see a way to do this
either. I may use either the zones suggestion or use the redirected restore
and dynamically remap the chunks of the 2nd instance during the onbar
restore.

I always use relative chunk path names, but that is because I do a lot of
MACH11 testing on a single machine and the chunk paths must match up. If
you should decide to do that then set up a directory, cd into that
directory, and do a redirected restore into that directory using relative
path names.
Then set up another directory and do the exact same thing in it.
Finally instead of starting the server by simply running oninit, create a
script which will first do a cd into the correct directory and then execute
oninit.
The key issue for making relative path name chunks work is to make sure
that you are in the correct directory when issuing oninit.
In my case, I set up my directories as /db/IDS/serv1, /db/IDS/serv2 etc.
and when I want to start a server up, I simply execute a script containing
---
-------------------------------------------------
tbset ()
{
. tbset $1 $2
}
tbset $1 cd
sudo -u informix oninit &
-------------------------------------------------------
where tbset is nothing but....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
export INFORMIXDIR=<Where you install informix>
export INFORMIXSERVER=$1
export ONCONFIG=onconfig.$1
export PATH=${INFORMIXDIR}/bin:${PATH}
export INFORMIXSQLHOSTS=${INFORMIXDIR}/etc/sqlhostsif [ $# -gt 1 ]
then cd /db/IDS/$1
fi
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------
To make it easier, I always set up my server names and onconfig names to
match the same subdirectory where my chunks (or links to the chunks) are
located.

Mark,
Yes SDS was already mentioned.
Though I don't see a way to do this
either. I may use either the zones suggestion or use the redirected restore
and dynamically remap the chunks of the 2nd instance during the onbar
restore.

Hi,
maybe chroot can help. You could build a chroot environment with some
links of the necessary dirs
like /bin /etc /usr INFORMIXDIR and make links to the new datastores
which have the same filename,
but a different location, if that is what you need.
Then start a shell using chroot and update your envvars. Running IDS
here should work, as long as
you put the instance # in onconfig to a unique value, which results to a
correct shared memory allocation.
Within the same filesystem, this is not possible without renaming the
chunk links.
Best regards,
Marcus

Thank you all for the idea of using relative chunk names. The challenge
is that the original instance does not use relative paths so I don't
think I would be able to use that now.
I also didn't want to do the redirected restore option of renaming the
chunks because then I would end up with different chunk names on each
server.
I guess I was "dreaming" of something that doesn't exist yet :-)
Have a great day,
