RE: char vs. varchar

OTC Just FYI, all you need to do in Java to trim a string is say... stringvar.trim() Compare this to 4GL or SQL, where you would say TRIM(stringvar). What does tend to happen is that Java programmers typically dont care much about underlying data structures in the database, until they are forced to, like the above instance. I would not blame them, they work at a higher level of abstraction than procedural programmers - objects spoil them, so they expect data to look like they want it to, unlike a procedural programmer who expects data to look like it is. And if anybody feels I am knocking Java programmers, I am one myself. Used to be an Informix DBA once upon a time, but thats another story <g>, Sujit Obnoxio The Clown <obnoxio@hotmail.com> on 04/05/2000 09:49:40 AM To: ricew@operamail.com cc: informix-list@iiug.org Subject: RE: char vs. varchar From: William Rice <ricew@operamail.com> > >I didn't realize that trimming was such a difficult task. I guess it's just an indication of what a cr@p language Java is. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
