Yes, the oninit binary is different.
The functionality that is limited by the express license is done so in the
server, not just via paper license.

the version number may be different but is the oninit binary different
between these to version numbers?
as a solution, why not get them to evaluate the software from of the
trials an beta site but don't use what they are not allowed to use.
then when they accept that its OK, order the express product

Zack,
Thanks for the clear language (if not the MIME).
Can you point us to documentation showing exactly what is and is not
allowed in the Express?

This would be *really* useful if someone could do it.
One of the excellent UK pre-sales support guys kindly made the 10.0UC3E
media available for me. It is indeed a different binary from the Enterprise
version. I'd like to test it to verify that it does indeed prevent the
disallowed functionality at the software level.
Unfortunately I cannot find a list of these restrictions anywhere, and I've
been all over the "Informix" part iof the IBM website. This has always been
an issue with Workgroup too: IBM seem loathe to provide a clear and
unambiguous list of what is not permitted in WE and Express in their
otherwise excellent array of product information, presumably in fear of
appearing "negative".

Do a google like "informix express announcement letter site:ibm.com" and you should find easily.
I have been through the IDS Express pages from http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/ids-express/ on down. A surprising number of them are broken and exactly none of them have the information I need. I have Googled because Google is the only way to fly the IBM site (though the search string is very helpful, Claus; I'll save it for later). I am betting the info is out there. If you go to the WGE page it spells out exactly what features Workgroup Edition has in a little table: "IBM Informix® Dynamic Server Workgroup Edition includes these features..." http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/ids/workgroup/ The EE page says this: "IBM Informix® Dynamic Server Enterprise Edition includes all of the Workgroup Edition features plus..." http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/ids/enterprise/ All we want is exactly this for Express Edition, for which we find this helpful page, instead: http://www-306.ibm.com/common/ssi/OIX.wss?DocURL=http://d03xhttpcl001g.boulder.ibm.com/common/ssi/rep_ca/5/897/ENUS205-105/index.html&InfoType=AN&InfoSubType=CA&InfoDesc=Announcement+Letters&panelurl=OIX.wss%3Fbuttonpressed%3DNAV002PT090&paneltext=Announcements In case the Google Groups form truncates the URL, which is the redirect from the announcement letter, I will post all the pertinent info: Offering Information Error Page Error 9100 default error We are not not able to get your user preferences from the server disk. This file might be corrupted or out of synch. Try again, but if this problem persists, please click here to reset your user preferences and press Reload. I just told management we can't use Express.
