I answered this question (and others) at the "Java Roadmap" session of last week's Informix User's Conference, so I'll follow it up here. Technically, you can do much of what you want using JDBC, as it does provide a hole for passing arbitrary objects. However, in order to do so, you'll wind up repeating a lot of the work Informix has done with the Java Object Interface (formerly known as the IUS Java API). The recommended strategy is to go ahead and use the Informix Java Object Interface (JOI). If you're concerned about the standards issue, don't be -- Informix has announced plans to provide an alternate implementation of JOI which runs atop JDBC drivers (so you can access other databases). Of course, if you are running against IUS, you'll probably want to use the native IUS JOI implementation, as it can provide better performance by taking advantage of IUS-specific features internally. Another issue to consider is whether you may eventually want to run some of your Java code as user defined routines within IUS itself. JOI is the preferred way to access the database from within a Java DataBlade. You may want to check out Informix Data Director for Java, which provides development tools which support creating Java database application which run against Informix Universal Server (and Informix Online, for that matter).
