HDR licenses

Question: does an HDR standby server need its own Informix license, and where is this documented? Answers: an HDR, RSS or separate-machine SDS secondary (and similarly a manually/log-restore-maintained warm standby) needs no extra licence as long as it is used purely as a hot standby; if users run any SQL against it, read or write, the secondary must be fully licensed. Respondents pointed to Carlton Doe's developerWorks article on Informix editions/licensing and to IBM's software licence agreement database, noting terms vary by edition and version.

Hello, Does HDR (standby server) require a separate Informix license? Can anyone point me to a documentation that deals with that issue? Thanks

Verify that the edition you want can use it on the big table. Under the current licensing, IB that an HDR or RSS secondary or an SDS secondary on a separate machine, do not require a separate license PROVIDED that they are used ONLY as a hot standby. If users access the secondary server, either for reading or for updating data, then the machine must be licensed. Same is true for a warm standby server that's kept updated manually through restores or using the 11.xx continuous log restore feature. Art Art S. Thanks Art, can you please point me to a link or documentation that deals with that licensing issue? Here are the licenses. Please be aware that different versions of Informix have different terms on this specific issue. http://www-03.ibm.com/software/sla/sladb.nsf John F. From Carlton Doe's article on the IBM web site: H/A secondary nodes can be deployed without charge if they are only functioning as a backup secondary. If you use any secondary node for SQL operations (read or write), the secondary node must be fully licensed. Here's the link to the article (I think someone else posted it also): http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/data/library/techarticle/dm-0801doe/ Art Art S.
