To his credit, Jonathan only said "It might work - the first word in each triple is the keyword, the second is the database object name (column, table), and the third is the alias."
Apparently, in IDS, there are occasional issues using SELECT and FROM as aliases. Note my examples, yesterday.

Not even with an AS clause can you select a column named NULL, at least in IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 9.40.TC6.
These are obviously critical flaws and will be vastly detrimental to Informix Market Share, thereby officially bringing this back on topic. I am certain that this information will spell the end of the IIUG, the informix-list, and comp.databases.informix, if not all of Usenet.
Personally, I am going to find a bottle of misspelled whisk*y to put in my larder while I drown my sorrows in weak and tasteless American beer and spend the rest of my life voting for whichever US political party will most immediately bring about the end the world in flame, flood, and universally accepted database standards.

Try including the table name as follows:
SELECT TABLE.NULL FROM TABLE;
