Reghu,
1. have a look at the onspaces command (type in onspaces at the
command prompt to get options). I use 7.22/7.23 on NT and Informix
have a GUI called space explorer do add space.
2.1 You only need logging when you want to recover transactions
performed after the last backup. If your users don't mind reentering
data don't turn logging on. If you have a database that does not have
logging on and you want to turn it on use the following command
ontape -s -mode DBNAME Where mode is B,U or A, for Buffered (smaller log space slower
processing), Unbuffered(more log space faster processing), Ansi(for
Ansi compliant databases)
2.2 The only way to do this is to calculate the longest running
transaction, work out how much log space it will consume and then
tripple it (my rule). In an unknown application I usually allocate 50
meg for physical log in its own dbspace (preferabbly on its own disk
never on the data disk) and 40 2.5meg logical logs in there own
dbspace (preferabbly on its own disk never on the data disk). When you
add the new logical logs make sure you remove the old logical logs
(use onparams). Then monitor the usage using "onstat -l" and add more
if necessary.
3 The dbspace has to be big enough to hold the database, plus some
room for growth, unless your database spans multiple dbspaces.
Remember a dbspace can be made up of lots of chunks (physical files or
raw devices).
I hope this helps.

Friends,
I'm in the midst of revamping an informix database which uses
Informix Online Dynamic Server(v 7.12) and running on windowsNT.I've
been an application developer all along and know very little about
managing databases.
I've completed the data modelling and the logical model
is ready for conversion to the physical database. The database will have
approximately 55 tables. I want to create the new database in a seperate
dbspace, since we already have 3 databases sitting in the root dbspace
on the server.I anticipate data in the range of 30-40k records for the
database.
The main questions i've are
1. How to create the dbspace and how to calculate the size of the
dbspace?
2. Is it required to create database with logging option? If so, how
do i calculate size of logical and physical log files ?
3. What is the relation between the size of the database and the
dbspace?
Any help in this matter would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks in advance
