Re: Error with Setnet32 connecting

Yes. And when you have done all this to get it to connect you start worying about GLS support and other things you may want or need to set up. Then you do this on every PC. Or perhaps you can find your way through the documentation to get this set up on a central computer - but that's on your PC network, not the Unix database server. When you have gotten all this to work some users need the ability to connect to several databases on different servers, probably simultaneously. You have to find a way to do that. And most things you have to do by setting something called environement variables. Those aren't supposed to be used any more on MS Windows, but Informix seems to use them. They do seem to store things in the registry anyway. And then you have the arcane user interface of setnet32 to work with. All the help awaylable is through a primitive help file or the manuals (they are good but a lot to read for such a simple thing). No direct help in the program itself. Not even selection lists or similar simple things. Why do people accept all this. It's so incredible to me. Even a "free" product shouldn't work this way. I prefer to pay for better things than to waste so much time on this. Why don't people tell Informix they want something better? I have. If more did may be they changed it. There are vastly much better products available out there right now, at least for ODBC and JDBC connection (see the FAQ). It would be so easy to create something usefull. Something Informix could be proud of. I am at a loss to understand why they have created this thing at all. Even more at a loss to understand why people install it unless they have to for runing a product using I-Connect only for connection. Luckily I don't have to use this. For a modest sum I have gotten something I can install and use with ease. We don't even have to use the ODBC manager any more to set up connections for our own programs. We have simply included installation of the whole ODBC driver with our programs as part of the simple, hardly any questions asked, installation program and they work on every PC at every installation. No special setup on each PC, access control on the server, web based interface for server side setup, high performance and feature rich and works all the time with zero support. Few things could be simpler and hardly better.
