I almost get the feeling you are talking about another database vendor. A "database" in Informix terminology is a collection of related tables. A database server can store many databases. A "database server" has resources (processes, shared memory) allocated to it. If you DO configure more than one database server on the same machine, then it must be started by either root or informix and all resources will be owned by root and group informix. Up to version 5 the resources were owned by informix.
