I don't agree. We upgrade from version 5.03 to a flavor of 7 just by
shutting the servers down, loading the new software on top of the old
software, then bringing the servers back up. You have to wait while new
table entries are made, etc. but you don't need to dbexport.
Obviously, try it out in test first. If you don't plan on recompiling your
code, you will need to load the new 4gl on top of the old 4gl and make sure
you have both 4gl library entries under $INFORMIXDIR/lib/tools.

No - you have to do an export /import.
Since Informix version 7.2x where GLS were introduced there is only the=
hard way with dbexport/dbimport.
If you have enough space you can configure a Informix 7.3x server and =
then
convert one database at a time otherwise you have export all your
databases, reconfigure the OnLine server and then do the import part. M=
eans
no 7*24 for quite a while.
Good luck.

We are now using 7.14 UD2 on HP-UX 10.20. This is a 24*7 production system.
Whole database is larger than 10GB. If we upgrade to 7.3, is it possible to
keep the data and upgrade DS itself? Cause I don't know how long will it
take to dbexport and dbimport the whole database, we can not afford very
long down time. Anyone has the experience or suggestion ?
Thanks in advance,
