Migrating DDL from Oracle to Informix
Posted in 2014
Lauri needed to convert an Oracle schema's DDL into Informix and couldn't find the IBM Migration Toolkit (MTK), since IBM's page redirected to Database Conversion Workbench, which doesn't support Informix. One reply said MTK was dropped and suggested hand-converting per the Redbook plus cleanup of odd data types. Art Kagel supplied a still-working IBM download link (Informix is an option in the questionnaire) and also suggested ER tools like ERwin or Dezign as an alternative. Lauri installed MTK and successfully converted the DDL, noting extent information isn't carried over but foreign keys come out correctly; Art added that MTK is unmaintained since 11.10 so newer types like BIGINT aren't used.

Hi, I am in the process of creating an Informix database based on DDL from an Oracle schema. I found an IBM Redbook with a reference to IBM Migration toolkit (MTK), but the link forwarded me to a new product called Database Conversion Workbench. I could find no reference to Informix there - does it support Informix? Is the MTK still somewhere to be found? I would rather not start messing with IBM Data Studio. Thanks, Lauri Pietarinen
Hello, Lauri. Unfortunately, IBM MTK has been discontinued. It has some serious issues, so the project was cancelled. IBM Informix 12.10 has almost everything you want, in terms of DDL, related to Oracle compatibility. So it must not be a hard work. My suggestion: take the Oracle DDL, do the basics convertion through the Redbook recommendations, and then do a fine tuning, searching for strange data types in the database model, and correct them. Oracle UDRs must not be a problem for you. In case you are migrating to an older Informix engine, I should strongly consider an upgrade of your engine, in order to ease your job. Hope this helps. Lauri: The IBM Migration Toolkit was extended for use converting to Informix, yes, in typical IBM fashion, it's just not reported on the download and description pages. If you go to the FAQ page for the product it is there and the download queationaire does ask if your target database is Informix. Here's the download link: https://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/download/preconfig.jsp?id=2006-10-18+07%3A 20%3A33.935737R&cat=database&fam=&s=&S_TACT=&S_CMP=&st=3&sp=20 You will have to use you IBM id to login and answer the questionaire before getting to the actual download link, but it works. An alternative, BTW, for the schema itself, would be to import the Oracle schema into an ER design tool like ERWin or Dezign for Databases and export it to Informix. Art Art S. Hi Art, and thanks for the link to the (discontinued?) MTK! I installed it and managed to convert the Oracle DDL to Informix. It looks like the extent-information from the Oracle DDL are not transfered to Informix, though. But it is a great help to get all the foreign keys with the right syntax out of the box. Lauri
Great! Glad it helped. MTK is not so much discontinued as no longer maintained. It hasn't been updated for new Informix features that a conversion might be able to take advantage of since v11.10. So, as an example, large numerics might be converted to DECIMAL or INT8 where using 11.70/12.10 features you might want it to be implemented as BIGINT instead. Art Art S. Hi Lauri, I missed/deleted the email... Please can you forward the MTK link to me... this may well be of use for a project I have in mind. Nick: If you miss something from the forums you can always go to the online forum pages on the IIUG web site and search the threads.
