new feature ? set PDQ with onmode....
Posted in 2011
Asked whether PDQPRIORITY can be changed on the fly for an already-running session via onmode (like onmode -Y for SET EXPLAIN), to boost one session without restarting it or editing its scripts. Answers: no such capability exists. onmode -wf/-wm only changes instance-level settings; PDQPRIORITY must be set within the session's SQL, or via sysdbopen/sysdbclose for a given user. Marco Greco noted that even if added, only statements prepared after the change would benefit, since auto_reprepare only triggers on table changes, not environment changes. No fix found; the poster was advised to file feature requests with IBM (for onmode -q PDQ change and for reprepare support), which he agreed to do.

Hi,
ifx 11.50 FC8 .
There is some way to set a PDQPRIORITY for a session with the onmode ?
The idea is active/deactive the PDQ for a session what already is running,
on-fly.
Something like active the set explain with "onmode -Y" , but to PDQ.
The objective is help a specific session, without need to restart this session
and without change the script/environment what they is running...
Regards
Cesar
Hi Cesar.
Onmode command (wf or wm) applies only to the instance configuration
(dynamically).
If you want to set pdqpriority for a specific session, you must do it
inside it´s specific sql command (before and after it´s execution).
If you want to set pdqpriority for all sessions for the user, you could
use sysdbopen/sysdbclose.
Regards.

Not possible Cesar. Cool feature request though. Submit it to IBM.

Nope there isn't such a provision, but it might be useful!
However, if it ever was implemented, it would have the limitation that only
statements prepared after the onmode had been run against the session would
benefit from it, not the ones already running, or those that, while not yet
being executed, had been prepared earlier.

Hi Marco,
Just as I thought!
Who knows if with the feature auto_reprepare is not possible reprepare
the SQL statements dynamically.
As Art suggest, I will submit to IBM this feature request.

[thinks...] It's not a bad idea at all, although, currently, it wouldn't do
what you want (and I should know, as I designed and coded auto_reprepare):
statements are not reprepared if already executing, and won't reprepare on a
session environment change - the feature actively looks for underlying table
changes before kicking in.
However, now you've tickled my interest, and I'm going to look into it! I
don't think it would be too complicated to have an onmode trigger the
reoptimization of statements for a specific session, much like your PDQ
suggestion.
Submit a feature request for this one too, the two combined should help you.

Thanks Marco, I will suggest both:
- Create new parameter on the "onmode -q <sesid> <pdqpriority>" to change
dynamically the PDQPRIORITY of specific session
- Enable the auto_reprepapre to support the pdqpriority change dynamically via
onmode.
