Archiving in BaaN
Posted in 2000
A Baan IV user on Informix, with 2.5 years of data, asked how to archive it in a Baan-independent way (possibly via a data warehouse/data mining tool usable with Cognos PowerPlay or Pilot), since they might later move to Baan 5 or SAP. Replies suggested TopTier/Vanenburg, Informix's newly acquired Red Brick warehousing tools, and SAS/Essbase, but several warned that external archiving risks data inconsistency because Baan's own archive sessions set flags and maintain links to the archive company. The poster concluded he would use Baan's built-in archiving on cost grounds; advice followed to apply all archive-session bugfixes first and to expect some sessions (e.g. tfgld410/415 printing) not to work in the archive company. One poster offered a document listing Baan archive sessions and the tables they touch.

Hello, We are using BaaN IV c.. since 1998. We planned our DB (Informix) to contain 2.5 year of data. Now we have to start thinking about archiving. We know that a archive company can be defined in BaaN (and are using it, but only tdinv1201m000). We are looking for a BaaN independent way of storing our archive. This is called a "data warehouse"/"data mining" product , I think ? Can someone give me advice ? Also, does this product incorporate/support utilities like Powerplay (Cognos) or Pilot ? We are located in Belgium / Europe. Please advice only for products available in Belgium. Thanks

It is Baan related, but actually independent. Vanenburg Ventures seems to have more information. Hi Informix also has recently acquired REDBRICK data warehousing product. There are other datawarehousing products available such SAS, ESSBASE etc. but are expensive solutions. bye. usman Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.
It is not adviseble to archive via a external program. In the archiving sessions a hole logic is placed. In short terms, it will set flags for all what is archived. (Placed to an archive company, and deleted in the live company, but will still create links to the archived data. There are also posibilities to use the archive data in the live companie again, like sales data, into e.g. planning. So to clean-up you're live company to get space use the Baan archiving tools. If you want to risk data inconsistentie, use a external program. This has nothing to do with data- warehousing. e.g. SAS can read from you're archive and live company both and can mix all you're data togetter even from other databases like DB2 from OS400(IBM), just like you want it. Kind regards Jan. If you've got a couple of Tools people around, why not develop your own archive? I agree with Jan totally about external archives...be very careful of them... jim.. Thanks to all for your reactions. We will probably use BaaN-archiving due to the high investment. We tought about using an extrenal tool because BaaN IV c3 can not meet the needs we have (warehouse management and finite scheduler) and connecting external packages to BaaN seems to be difficult and/or very expensive. If we could archive in a BaaN independent way, we could use this archive tool after we switched to another environment (e.g. BaaN 5, SAP, ...). In some cases we have to go back up to 5+ years. One tip, get all the bugfixes for the archive sessions before starting. Check also bugfixes from older versions and new versions . Also is it some possible that you don't get all the sessions working in the archive company. For example sessions who whose tfgld410/415 dont print. This can be a problem for the financial department. Greetings and good luck. Hi all, Just back from the US (course TopTier/BDN) so I didn't follow this discussion from the beginning but I want to let you know that we (VBS Belgium) made a little document that gives a good overview of all archive sessions that exist in BaaN and we added some more background information on what all these sessions do: Which tables will be cleaned/archived. For the moment it is only a first draft but we are updating it when we discover more information. For people who are unfamiliar whit archiving in Baan it can be already a very good start. If anyone likes to have it, I think we can arrange for you to get this doc. Hi Daniel, I feel that your needs are oriented to eventually go back to old data with report or extracting purposes, probably with specific scopes or combinations. If so, the solution is in Informix. They acquire Redbrick some months ago and now they have a very powerful set of tools for Datawarehousing, Data Mining and Report. I saw a specific solution designed for Baan in the Solutions Portal 99 last june in San Diego. If you are interested, the contact guy is John Smiley in Informix. He is the BaaN Manager into the Informix USA and he developed the solution as an Informix Service. Regards.
