Internal Limits - Are there any?

Suddenly we are running into a problem updating a table. We run release 2.10.00 on an Altos 3068. The table has about 1020 records and we have never had a problem before. Unfortunately, since we never had a problem before we have no idea how many records were in the table or how many were being updated. We do know there were less than are there now but we have no idea how many less. If we update in pieces it works. For example if we update where an item matches "[A-M]*" and then do "[N-Z]*" it works. Through trial and error we have determined that the update fails for a subset on the order of 775 records and/or about 330 updates within the subset. Because the table is fairly uniform, we cannot determine if this depends on the number of records scanned or the number actually updated. However, we think it is pretty clear we are running into some kind of internal limit. Has anybody seen this before? If so, is there a limit? What is it? And, is there a work around? Updating to a later release probably is not possible. I don't think Altos is supporting the 3068 any more. Thanks for your help. ----- Bob Peirce, Pittsburgh, PA 412-471-5320 ...!uunet!pitt!investor!rbp rbp@investor.pgh.pa.us
