Crystal with Informix 7.3 Problems?

We run 5 to 20 large crystal reports at any one time. The more crystal reports that are running the higher the load on the system. They are locking up every table they hit. Has anyone found a solution to this problem other than scrapping crystal? What about stored procedures?
