The current system is informix 5.x with a 4gl front end. All the users IP addresses are in the DB servers host file. They are changing the network to use DHCP what do i need to do on the DB server to make sure i don't get -954 errors(client unknown to host). TIA, Bill

Put the IP addresses of the DHCP range in the /etc/hosts file on the server, with a unique name for each. e.g. 172.17.5.1 lldchp01 172.17.5.2 lldchp02 172.17.5.3 lldchp03 172.17.5.4 lldchp04 172.17.5.5 lldchp05 172.17.5.6 lldchp06 172.17.5.7 lldchp07 172.17.5.8 lldchp08 172.17.5.9 lldchp09 172.17.5.10 lldchp10 (The 'll' is a site specific code). You might not need the name for informix (I think it may be just something that our app needs). The actual mechanics of doing this for a large number of clients is a nice exercise in shell scripting. Edit the hosts file, putting a word like 'splitter' at the point where you want the new addresses. Use csplit to create two separate files (hosts1 and hosts2) split at that point. Edit hosts2 and remove the word splitter. Run the following on the command line: i=1; while [ $i -le 255 ]; do echo "172.17.5.${i} lldhcp${i}" \\ >> hosts1; done cat hosts1 hosts2 > hosts HTH, Richard. (Can't be bothered to go back and change it, so please note that the "ll" is in fact 2 x lower case L!!)

Forgot the i=`expr $i + 1`, right before "done. Look, it's Friday afternoon, OK? :-) Richard.
