You can find some information about Informix+Linux at www.informix.com/idn After registration you have access to all IDN corners. Visit the Linux corner to get an "install pdf" for Linux... hi all, can anybody give me an URL where to find a good description of how to setup and install an Informix Dynamic Server with using RedHat Linux ??? I've searched a whole day but founf nothing useful.. :( thx ind advance joerg
Try: www.informix.com/informix/products/linux/5274.pdf This is a PDF document which requires Adobe Acrobat. You can get to this page browsing to the Informix Developers' Network, Linux Corner which requires that you register with a valid serial number which you should have gotten when you downloaded the software from IntrWare. AHH, entirely different question, yes. You want information on tuning
your engine and creating dbspaces and chunks, correct?
To the latter:
Create disk partitions on Linux the way you would for a filesystem
then you have to decide whether to use a filesystem file or an entire
device/partition. If you decide to use the entire partition make sure
that the partitions are <= 2GB as this is currently the largest chunk that
Informix can use and even using offsets you cannot use space in a larger
partition past the 2GB boundary. Using a device will allow you to take
advantage of the new Linux TRUE RAW partitions when the code has been made
part of a production release (it is in the current development release and
available for several current production releases separately). Otherwise
create filesystems and touch the filenames of the chunks you will need on
these filesystems. Next create a directory, usually under the Informix
install directory, named say "chunks" and place there soft links (ln -s)
to all of the partitions' device files and or filesystem files that you
will use for your chunks. Now you can use either onmonitor or onspaces,
assuming the engine is already online, to create dbspaces and add chunks
from the links you have created (remember to use absolute pathnames).
To the former:
See my article on tuning your engine and system in Tech Notes Volume 8,
Issue 3 and/or William D. Burton's article on the topic which will be in
the upcomming Tech Notes Volume 9, Issue 3 (William posted a URL pointing
to the latest draft of that article a few days ago, search the IIUG
archives of this list by his name to find it). Also get one or two of the
excellent books on the subject by: Joe Lumbley (highly recommended),
Carlton Doe, Elizabeth Sota, and others. Search amazon.com or bn.com (Barnes
and Noble) for keyword "Informix" and you'll find them all.
Finally, setup the server, play tuning games, and benchmark typical
queries and updates to see how your tuning is helping of hindering
performance, every installation is unique and this kind of testing is the
ONLY way to get peak performance.
