Something else: If you are performing many correlated sub-queries, note that 7.3x tries to unwind these into flat joins. This CAN greatly improve performance if you have the appropriate indexes to support the resulting join code (SET EXPLAIN will tell you if sub- query flattening is occurring) but if the indexes are NOT in place the resulting query plan will be a dog. If this is the problem you can either monitor the problem queries and add any missing indexes or you can turn sub-query flattening off. Check the Administrator's Guide there is an ONCONFIG parameter or environment variable to do that at engine startup time. Art S.
