Andreas Lommel asked how to create a new user on IDS 7.30 on Solaris. The answers were to create a UNIX login and then grant table rights in the database. mars1972 noted the user need not be in the informix group. Victor Glass explained that IDS 7.x authenticates against the host OS, so database users must be valid UNIX users. Paul Watson confirmed. Answered.

Hi there ! I have IDS 7.30 on solaris. What must I do to create a new
user ?
Is it enough to create a user in the group informix on unix ?
After that to give him rights on tables in the datadases ?
That should do it. Although there's no requirement that (s)he belong to
the informix group.

IDS 7.x uses the host UNIX OS for authentication. If a user is
connecting from a PCs, without first telneting, then the name and
password that is being transmitted for the purposes of connection to the
database *must* also be a valid UNIX login and password.
To access tables, the user then needs to be granted the desired access
rights. This procedure has solely to do with the database manager and is
technically not related to UNIX OS. In fact, these grants can be done
without the user being a valid UNIX user. But then again, if the user is
not a valid UNIX user they will not be able to connect to the database to
use those table rights. I am lead to believe that Oracle and Sybase do
not rely on the host OS for authentication. I am also lead to believe
that Informix 9.x does not either.
