Re: NewEra programers

You're not alone in your misery -We're lumbered with NE2.12 As we needed lots of custom classes due to NE's limitations we don't even have enough time or resources to upgrade it until a lot later on. If anyone has used NE 2.x connecting to SQL Server (long story) I'd be very grateful to hear from them. (NE3.x has the functionality I'm looking for that NE2.12 doesn't - trying to find some work around - synopses of the problem at end of message) As far as changing tools goes, we've moved to VB with ADO 2 and VC++ when necessary for any new apps we design. When we get the chance we will duly upgrade to VB and ceremoniously burn the NE code. I think its a sensible option. So, you're not crying alone... John My problem: Due to legacy restrictions our New Era apps have been writing (and duplicating) data to Informix, Fox dbs. We now need to add SQL Server 6.5 to this. Problem is this. SQL Server implements page locking, not row locking and default lock mode is WAIT (NO WAIT on Informix I think) So any update I attempt on a locked row (or region near that locked row) will wait until the transaction has committed or rolled back before returning control back to my app. I wanted to set a request timeout but this is available only for Native Informix connections in v2.12 and not ODBC connections. To make matters worse, I can't even set the isolation level. When I specify dirty read (SQL_txn_read_uncommitted) I get a return code of -1. If anyone on the planet has had similar difficulties, I would love to hear from them.
