Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
A first-time poster (debbie) wanted to store PDF files in Informix Dynamic Server 10 on Linux and asked about best practice. Obnoxio The Clown said to use a blobspace or a BYTE column and pointed to the documentation on populating it. Adam Tauno Williams showed a CREATE TABLE with a BYTE column IN a blobspace and said they store PDFs this way. The poster still asked for the load/retrieve syntax; no answer followed.

Hi all - first time post-ee here.
I need to store .pdf files in Informix (Dynamic Server 10 on Linux)
After days of futile research I am still unsure which direction to
take. What is the "best practice" method for storing large objects in
Informix? Should I setup and use a blobspace? Can a byte data type
column be used? If so, how do you populate it?
Any insight is appreciated!
Thanks.

Warning: I'm drunk.
1. You could use a BLOBspace.
2. You could use a BYTE column.
3. You can see ways of populating it here:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/idshelp/v10/topic/com.ibm.sqlr.doc/sqlrmst101.htm#sii-02-39286
Maybe you should try drinking. This took me two minutes to find.

Yes

Yes
Just like -
CREATE TABLE foo (
normal_field_1 INT,
normal_field_2 CHAR(12),
blob_field BYTE IN blobspace
) IN tablespace;

? Via SQL?
We have a large blobpace in Informix on Linux used to store PDFs.
Thank you, Adam.
I'm no DBA so please bear with me.

I figured, but I'm not clear on the syntax....what do you use to
populate and retrieve? (load, unload, what is filetoblob?..etc..)
Thanks, again!
