Any way around maximum variables in ACE?

I received the following question. Can anyone help? -------------------------------------------------------------------- I have a client with a problem in that an older version of Informix that has user-modified source code is being used for a mission-critical application. That is a problem in and of itself, but in the near term there are some critical enhancements that cannot be made because they are bumping the maximum number of variables that can be declared in Informix Ace. So, I am looking for someone familiar with the internals to increase this number of variables to get us through the next year. We have a plan for moving off this platform, but it is on a longer time horizon than is acceptable for completing these enhancements. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Basically, is there any way around the maximum number of declared variables allowed in an ACE program? No. I know that on occasion a special port has been done with increased limits, but I don't think that the increased limits have ever been part of the main code stream. Your only chance is some sort of special pleading for a version with limits increased -- contact Tech Support. If you don't have Tech Support (yet), now might be a good time to think about getting it. -- Yours, Jonathan Leffler (Jonathan.Leffler@Informix.com) #include <disclaimer.h> Guardian of DBD::Informix v1.00.PC1 -- http://www.perl.com/CPAN "I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it!"
Hi! Could you specify which version are you running, on which platform and how many variables you have in Ace. What error message do you get? Is it a runtime or compile error? You cannot directly perform calculations on them but you can get around that too with a couple temp vars. variable intval1 integer variable intval2 integer variable longstr char(500) let intval1 = 123 let longstr[1,10] = intval1 let intval1 = 456 let longstr[11,20] = intval1 let intval1 = 321 let intval2 = longstr[1,10] let longstr[1,10] = intval1 + intval2 let intval2 = longstr[11,20] let longstr[21,30] = intval1 + intval2 print longstr yields: 444 456777 I don't know why a straight assignment seems to be right justified while a calculation is left justified in the longstr but it doesn't see to make any difference. -- +----------------------------------------------------------+ David Kleppinger DKleppinger@dts.edu Assoc.
