Although we were able to identify the circumstances that caused it, and thus avoid it in the future, I don't believe there is a solution once you enter the situation you describe above. In our case, we found that if an UPDATE STATISTICS statement is issued by SQL or 4GL when lock mode has been set to wait, the process will hang. If this happens when the logical logs are full a deadlock occurs that cannot be recovered from. I believe, from discussions with Informix, that the process is waiting for logical log space before it can finish, but OnLine is waiting for the process to finish before it can complete a checkpoint. We reported the problem to Informix and it was subsequently given bug number B7433. We discovered it in OnLine V4.00.UD2 but I believe it is still there... Having lost one development database I'm not game to find out :-( If your problem has been caused in the same way as ours, the workaround for _avoiding_ the problem is to remove all instances of UPDATE STATISTICS in SQL scripts or 4GL programs. Do UPDATE STATISTICS manually when 1) lock mode is not set to wait and 2) the logical logs are not full. Sorry I can't offer more help about how to get out of the deadlock. In our case we reinitialised the root dbspace and recovered from there.
