thanks a million! NETTYPE soctcp,,, did the trick.
Could someone from Informix pls include this parameter in the onconfig.std
file.
Would have saved me quite a few hours.
Using onmonitor to set the parameter would have prevented you from using an
incorrect value and would have set the correct default values.
Never directly edit the onconfig file if you can help it.

And here I recommend to NEVER use onmonitor it's just too damn easy to
answer 'Y' to "Initialize ...". Certainly you have to be careful but
overall you will do less damage using vi or emacs than using onmonitor.
I only use onmonitor for changing LTAPEDEV on the fly.
